Game of Thrones Star Carice van Houten Arrested at Climate Protest

Famous Dutch actress Carice van Houten, widely known for her roles in international film and television, was among those arrested at a climate change protest on the A12 highway earlier today.

The protest, organized by the global environmental group Extinction Rebellion (XR), attracted several high-profile Dutch figures, including singer Merol and writer Simone van der Vlugt. Actor Sieger Sloot, writer Maartje Wortel, and comedian Donny Ronny, formerly known as Stefano Keizers, had announced their participation in advance.

Van Houten, renowned for her compelling performances on the silver screen, was part of a group of protestors that blocked the A12 highway, leading to her arrest. The ANP news agency reporter on site documented the actress being escorted away by bus.

The XR demonstration began in the early afternoon, and it wasn't long before law enforcement stepped in. Police deployed water cannons in an attempt to disperse the group of activists, drenching many, including van Houten.

The actress had earlier shared via Instagram that she was partaking in the protest, also documenting the moment she was soaked by the water cannons.

The participation of such notable figures underscores the growing concern in the Netherlands, and globally, about the urgent threat of climate change. This event is just one of many worldwide where celebrities are using their platform to draw attention to environmental issues.

Further details about the event and the repercussions for those arrested, including Carice van Houten, are expected to unfold in the coming hours.
